Indian Judoka Ishroop Narang Misses Bronze at Commonwealth Games 2026

Glasgow, August 2: In a nail-biting contest at the Commonwealth Games 2026, Indian judoka Ishroop Narang narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the women’s 78 kg category. Competing at SEC Hall 4 on Sunday, Narang faced off against Canada’s Korali Godbout, who clinched victory in the ‘golden score’ phase.

After a tense match that ended without a score in the allotted time, both judokas entered the ‘golden score’ round. There, Godbout secured the decisive ‘yuko’ at 6:19 minutes, earning the bronze medal.

Throughout the match, both athletes focused on strategy, resulting in no points being scored during regulation time. Penalties were issued to both competitors, but it was the Canadian who capitalized first in the extra time, ultimately leading to her victory.

This close defeat meant that despite a commendable performance, Narang did not reach the podium. This incident adds to the list of missed medal opportunities for India in judo at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Although Narang did not win a medal, she displayed remarkable courage and resilience throughout her campaign. She pushed her higher-ranked opponent to the ‘golden score’ and lost by a narrow margin.

In her earlier matches, Narang had secured a win against Scotland’s Nicole Wood but faced defeat in the quarter-finals against England’s Emma Reed. She later bounced back in the repechage round, defeating Cameroon’s Georgika Wesley Jengyu Moon to earn her place in the bronze medal match, where she ultimately fell short.

India has claimed a total of four medals in judo, including two golds, one silver, and one bronze. So far, the country has achieved a total of 39 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026, comprising 13 golds, 17 silvers, and 9 bronzes. India currently stands fourth in the medal tally.
