Kolkata, February 17: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) reported on Tuesday that it apprehended a Bangladeshi fishing vessel along with 28 crew members for illegally fishing in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Bay of Bengal.
The vessel was intercepted on Sunday while the ICG ship was conducting surveillance in the northern Bay of Bengal.
In an official statement, the Coast Guard said, “On February 15, during monitoring in the northern Bay of Bengal, a Bangladeshi vessel was caught with 28 crew members for allegedly fishing illegally in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).”
The statement further detailed that during the patrol, the ship detected the Bangladeshi fishing boat operating in Indian waters, violating the Maritime Zones of India (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981 (MZI Act). The Coast Guard’s search teams stopped the vessel and conducted a thorough inspection.
According to officials, the crew lacked any valid authorization or permits to fish in Indian maritime areas. Fishing equipment and the catch indicated active fishing operations in a restricted zone.
The crew was detained, and the vessel was seized and safely transported to Frasergunj for further legal action.
The Coast Guard emphasized in its statement, “This underscores the Indian Coast Guard‘s unwavering commitment to safeguarding India’s maritime interests, preventing illegal fishing, and ensuring the safety of Indian fishermen operating in the region.”
Additionally, the Indian Coast Guard maintains continuous vigilance in the Bay of Bengal through round-the-clock surface and aerial monitoring to enforce maritime laws and protect national marine resources.
