Gangtok, February 23: The Indian Army successfully rescued 46 tourists stranded in the high-altitude areas of Eastern Sikkim under ‘Operation Himrahat’. Officials confirmed the operation on Monday.

Defense officials reported that heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures on February 22 disrupted transportation in several sensitive areas of Eastern Sikkim. This left many tourist vehicles stuck and civilians exposed to severe weather conditions.

In response, troops stationed in the region launched a coordinated relief and rescue operation. According to an official statement, the rescued tourists were taken to the nearest army camp, where they received medical checks and necessary care.

To alleviate the effects of extreme cold and altitude-related stress, the Indian Army provided warm shelters, food, heating facilities, and essential relief supplies. Medical teams closely monitored the health of all rescued individuals, ensuring they were fit for travel before sending them onward. In addition to evacuating stranded individuals, the army also assisted in safely relocating over 150 tourist vehicles from affected routes to secure locations.

Soldiers managed traffic in difficult areas, preventing panic and exposure to adverse weather conditions. Defense officials noted that prompt action helped restore transportation in the region and prevented the situation from worsening amid the inclement weather.

Despite challenging conditions and freezing temperatures, army personnel remained highly active throughout the operation. This rescue mission underscores the Indian Army‘s ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR), particularly in remote and inaccessible areas affected by natural disasters.

Officials further stated that the successful execution of ‘Operation Himrahat’ once again highlights the army’s role as a reliable first responder during natural calamities in the region.
