Okazaki, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : India has achieved a remarkable milestone at the 2026 Asian Games by winning its 11th gold medal. The women’s recurve archery team triumphed over South Korea in a historic final held at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square on October 2. This victory marks the first gold medal for India in women’s recurve archery at the Asian Games.
The Indian team faced a formidable South Korean squad, known for its dominance in the sport, and emerged victorious with a score of 5-3. The match began with a tightly contested first set, ending in a tie at 54 points each, earning both teams one point.
In the second set, South Korea started strong with scores of 10, 9, and 9. India quickly responded, with a crucial 10 from Kumkum Mohod, followed by an 8 from Kirti Sharma. Ankita Bhakt then secured another 10, allowing India to equalize the set at 2-2 after a tense performance from the young player Kumkum, who delivered a vital shot under pressure.
The third set saw South Korea falter with an initial score of 8, while India capitalized with a 10 and a 9. With South Korea scoring three consecutive 8s, India seized the opportunity to clinch the set, leading 4-2 after Kumkum’s decisive 10.
In the fourth set, South Korea began with two 9s but faltered again. India scored 8, 8, and 9, before Kumkum’s final shot of 10 sealed the match at 5-3.
Kumkum Mohod, Ankita Bhakt, and Kirti Sharma displayed exceptional skill and composure throughout the competition. At just 17 years old, Kumkum emerged as the star of the final, consistently delivering crucial points when needed. Ankita’s experience and Kirti’s resilience under pressure contributed significantly to the team’s success.
Earlier in the tournament, India secured its place in the finals by defeating China 5-1 in the semifinals, marking a historic achievement for the women’s recurve team.
