
Johannesburg, April 26: India’s losing streak in the five-match T20 series against South Africa has come to an end. After losing the first three matches, the Indian team clinched a victory in the fourth match, defeating South Africa by 14 runs, largely due to Deepti Sharma’s outstanding performance with both bat and ball.
After being invited to bat first, India scored 185 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Jemimah Rodrigues, batting at number three, contributed significantly with a quickfire 43 runs off 29 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes.
Deepti Sharma, batting at number six, along with Richa Ghosh at number seven, played a crucial role in propelling the team to a competitive total. The duo remained unbeaten, adding 65 runs in just 38 balls. Deepti scored 36 runs off 26 balls with 5 fours, while Richa contributed 34 runs off 18 balls, hitting 5 fours and 1 six.
Chasing a target of 186 runs, South Africa managed only 171 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, resulting in a 14-run defeat. Suné Luus was the top scorer for South Africa with 40 runs, while Tazmin Brits added 30 runs to the total.
Deepti Sharma delivered her best bowling performance in T20 cricket, taking 5 wickets for just 19 runs in 4 overs, playing a pivotal role in securing the win for India. Kranti Gaur, Shree Charani, Kashvi Gautam, and Shafali Verma each took 1 wicket.
For her all-round contribution, Deepti Sharma was named Player of the Match.
The fifth and final match of the series will be played on Monday. The Indian team aims to reduce the deficit in the series, which currently stands at 3-1 in favor of South Africa.
