India Reiterates Stance on Cross-Border Terrorism, Suspends Indus Water Treaty

New Delhi, May 7: India has once again clarified its position regarding the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), stating that the agreement is currently suspended. The Indian government asserts that this decision is a direct response to Pakistan’s ongoing support for cross-border terrorism.

During a weekly press briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that Pakistan must unequivocally cease its support for cross-border terrorism. He stated, “Our stance on the Indus Water Treaty has always been clear. This treaty is suspended in response to Pakistan’s promotion of cross-border terrorism. Pakistan should permanently abandon its support for terrorism.”

On the same day, India marked the first anniversary of ‘Operation Sindoor.’ This military operation, conducted on May 7 last year, targeted terrorists and their bases in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PoK) and Pakistan itself. The operation was initiated following a significant terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025.

The spokesperson reiterated that Pakistan has long incorporated cross-border terrorism into its state policy. “India has the full right to defend itself and will continue to strengthen its global fight against terrorism,” he said.

He added that the world has recognized the Pahalgam attack for what it was. “We responded to Pakistan’s support for terrorism. The international community is aware that Pakistan has long utilized cross-border terrorism as a policy. India has every right to protect itself from terrorism, and we will continue to bolster our global fight against it.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also remarked that Operation Sindoor demonstrated India’s strong response to cross-border terrorism and established accountability for such attacks. He affirmed that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government remains committed to a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ towards terrorism.
