New Delhi, March 7: India has seen its billionaire count rise to 308, an increase of 24 from last year, according to the ‘Hurun Global Rich List 2026’ released by the Hurun Research Institute.
With this growth, India now ranks third in the world for the number of billionaires, following the United States and China, which hold the first and second spots, respectively.
The report indicates that the total wealth of Indian billionaires has grown by 10% annually, reaching ₹112.6 lakh crore. Among these, 199 billionaires reported an increase in their wealth.
However, 109 billionaires experienced a decline or stagnation in their fortunes. The report also highlights that women account for approximately 7% of India’s billionaires.
According to the Hurun report, the increase in billionaires in India is now extending beyond traditional industries into several new sectors. This suggests that economic growth is occurring across various areas in the country.
The healthcare sector has produced the most new billionaires, with 53 emerging, followed by the industrial products sector with 36 and the consumer goods sector with 31.
Despite the lower number of new billionaires, the energy sector still holds the most wealth. Only 8 billionaires in this sector possess a total of ₹18.3 lakh crore, representing about 16% of the total wealth of India’s billionaires.
Mumbai remains the largest hub for billionaires in India, housing 95 of them. However, Shenzhen in China has now taken the title of Asia’s billionaire capital, with 133 billionaires.
This year, Mumbai welcomed 15 new billionaires, surpassing New York (14) and London (9).
Globally, New York tops the list of billionaire cities, with 146 billionaires, followed by Shanghai (120), Beijing (107), and London (102).
The report also notes that the average age of Indian billionaires is 67, slightly above the global average of 65.
Furthermore, India’s 23 female billionaires collectively hold wealth amounting to ₹9.8 lakh crore.
