New Delhi, May 30: On the 45th death anniversary of former Bangladeshi President Ziaur Rahman, India paid tribute to him. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh recalled his historic radio address from March 1971, which inspired the public and strengthened the spirit of resistance against oppression, playing a crucial role in Bangladesh’s liberation struggle.
India assured that it stands with Bangladesh in all circumstances, highlighting the sacrifices both nations have made to progress on the path of development.
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka posted on social media platform X, stating, “As Bangladesh remembers one of its great sons, former President Ziaur Rahman, we reflect on the historic radio address from March 1971. That speech ignited tremendous enthusiasm among the people, inspiring them to raise their voices against oppressors, ultimately paving the way for freedom.”
The mission further expressed, “Today, India is ready to move forward shoulder to shoulder with the people of Bangladesh. We have shared sacrifices and are always prepared to pave the way for our nations’ progress.”
On this occasion, thousands gathered at Zia Udyan in Dhaka, including leaders from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), to pay their respects. Ziaur Rahman’s son and party leader Tarique Rahman also commemorated him.
Ziaur Rahman was assassinated on May 30, 1981, at the Chittagong Circuit House, allegedly planned by some disgruntled army officers.
Recently, India has emphasized enhancing cooperation between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended Eid-ul-Azha greetings to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the people of Bangladesh, expressing a desire to strengthen bilateral relations further.
Both nations reiterated their commitment to advancing shared cultural heritage, mutual respect, and development-based partnerships.
