New Delhi, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : The Secretary of Electronics and Information Technology, S. Krishnan, emphasized India’s pivotal role in the global semiconductor design landscape during the ongoing Semicon India 2026 event. Speaking on the third day of the conference, he highlighted key areas of focus, including investment policies and a 240-hour skill training program aimed at enhancing the manufacturing ecosystem.
Krishnan noted that the skill training initiative has shown promising results. “One company piloted this project and reported greater success in India compared to similar efforts in other countries. Therefore, we will prioritize all aspects of skill development, especially in semiconductor manufacturing,” he stated.
He further revealed that India accounts for nearly 20% of the world’s semiconductor design workforce. “We have a significant pool of skilled talent in chip design. Currently, we are running a program to train approximately 85,000 design engineers,” Krishnan added.
On the topic of investment policies, he explained that each proposal related to semiconductor investments will be meticulously analyzed. “Given the substantial incentives provided by the government, we must carefully evaluate each proposal before committing to incentives, as public funds are involved,” he said.
Krishnan also mentioned the strong interest from both domestic and multinational companies in investing in this sector. He attributed this interest to two main factors: confidence in India’s talent pool and the stability and support offered by government policies. “This is why many companies and investors are eager to come to India and invest. We will actively encourage and collaborate with them,” he concluded.
