New Delhi/Pune : Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the success of the digital payment system in India has proved the skeptics wrong. Sitharaman said that India has been at the forefront of the world in terms of UPI payments.
Addressing the ’20 Years of Modi Rule’ program of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers here on Thursday, Sitharaman said that during the lockdown, the amount reached people’s bank accounts by pressing a button. If they could not go to the bank or did not know about it, then banks went to the village and gave them their money.
He said that many apprehensions were raised about how digital payments would be able to work, especially in rural areas where internet connectivity is not good. But despite the Corona epidemic, India remained at the forefront of UPI payments in the world, while some advanced economies were making checks and sending them to people through post by putting them in envelopes.
Sitharaman said a few years ago a minister in the UPA government had said that it is impossible to popularize electronic payments because how would you pay ₹7 to a vegetable vendor has gone away.
