India and Singapore Navies Showcase Maritime Skills in Bay of Bengal

The India-Singapore naval exercise SIMBEX-2026 begins in Visakhapatnam, enhancing maritime cooperation and operational readiness.

Visakhapatnam, October 21 (Daily Kiran) : India and Singapore’s navies are set to test their maritime strength and combat skills in the Bay of Bengal. The 33rd edition of the bilateral naval exercise, ‘SIMBEX-2026,’ commenced on October 21 in Visakhapatnam and will run until October 26. This year’s focus is on anti-submarine warfare, countering aerial threats, and enhancing coordination in maritime operations.

The Singapore Navy’s warship, RSS Supreme, arrived in Visakhapatnam on October 21 for the exercise. The opening ceremony was held aboard Indian Navy ships INS Nilgiri and INS Kamorta, attended by senior officials from both navies, including the Chief Staff Officer (Operations) of the Eastern Naval Command and the Fleet Commander of the Singapore Navy.

This exercise began in 1994 under the name ‘Exercise Lion King’ and has evolved into a significant component of maritime cooperation between the two countries. It provides an opportunity for both navies to understand each other’s operational procedures, share experiences, and improve coordination in joint missions.

‘SIMBEX-2026’ will unfold in two phases. The first phase, from October 21 to 23, will involve port activities in Visakhapatnam, including professional discussions among naval officers, expert consultations, ship tours, sports activities, and planning meetings. Following this, the second phase will take place at sea from October 24 to 26, where both navies will conduct various tactical exercises under operational conditions.

Exercises will include anti-submarine detection and engagement, surface combat against enemy vessels, and responses to aerial threats. The focus will also be on ship operations and tactical maneuvers. This exercise is crucial for enhancing India and Singapore’s strong maritime ties and reaffirming their commitment to peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The aim is to improve operational coordination between the two navies and strengthen their capability to address shared maritime challenges, reinforcing their joint commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and maritime security in the region.
