New Delhi, February 19: A significant collaboration between India and Malaysia has emerged in the field of artificial intelligence. With the support of IIT Madras, a cutting-edge AI excellence center will be established in Johor, Malaysia. This center aims to serve as a hub for artificial intelligence and related technologies.

Johor Corporation, the leading investment and development agency in Malaysia’s Johor state, is spearheading this initiative. This development marks a new chapter in the relations between the two countries. The momentum for this initiative gained traction following Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent visit to Malaysia. The agreement on digital technology and knowledge sharing is now set to materialize.

Discussions held during the pre-AI summit in Kuala Lumpur paved the way for this agreement. The initiative is a joint effort between IIT Madras’s Global Research Foundation and Johor Corporation. A memorandum of understanding was signed, formalizing this ambitious project.

IIT Madras emphasizes that this is not just another technical project; it aims to create a platform where research can transition directly to industry and society. B. N. Reddy, India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, described this initiative as a strengthening link in digital cooperation between the two nations.

He stated that this initiative aligns with ongoing efforts under the Malaysia-India Digital Council. It aims to elevate partnerships in areas such as digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital talent, and artificial intelligence.

Officials from Johor Corporation believe that this center could be transformative for the state’s economy. It will foster new technological capabilities, provide training for local talents, and offer advanced solutions to industries. The proposed excellence center will be based on the core principles of responsible artificial intelligence.

It will focus on fairness, transparency, security, and good governance. Applied research, professional training, expert exchanges, collaboration with innovation-based enterprises, and testing projects for industries will be conducted here. This means that technology will not only be developed but also tested and implemented in real-world scenarios.

IIT Madras stated that this partnership will create a model that brings together research, industry, and policy. Meanwhile, Johor Corporation will play a crucial role in making this initiative practical by linking industries and investment mechanisms in the state.

IIT believes that this step will provide new direction to technological cooperation between India and Malaysia. If everything proceeds as planned, Johor could soon become a leading center for responsible and applied artificial intelligence in Southeast Asia.
