Kullu, August 24: In the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, the incomplete building of Government High School Chansari is raising questions about the government’s claims regarding education and development. Construction of the school building began in 2019, yet nearly seven years later, the project remains unfinished. The old school building suffered significant damage during the heavy rains and disasters of 2023, leaving over 100 students facing a space crisis for their studies.
Children from three panchayats attend Chansari School. These include students from Bandal and Halaini in Bandal Panchayat, Seugi in Seugi Panchayat, and Dharth, Chansari, Pechha, Mahish, and Upper Tharku villages in Chansari Panchayat. After the old building was damaged, the school management committee arranged for classes to be held in a private building, but that contract has now expired.
Devendra Sharma, the president of the School Management Committee (SMC), stated that the tender for the school building’s construction was awarded for approximately 1.18 crore rupees, yet the work remains incomplete. He warned that if the education department does not take prompt action, it will become increasingly difficult to conduct classes for the children in the coming days. He has urged the administration to expedite the construction of the new building.
In this regard, a delegation from the school management committee and local residents met with the Deputy Commissioner of Kullu. The villagers demanded that the construction of the school building be completed swiftly. They expressed that the current arrangement requires two or three classes to be held in a single room, adversely affecting the students’ education.
Local resident Sheetu Sharma mentioned that demands for action regarding the school building have been made to the administration multiple times since the disaster. He noted that children are facing significant difficulties during their studies, as multiple classes are being conducted in one room. The villagers have appealed to the government to expedite the completion of the school.
Meanwhile, teacher Bhal Chand Shastri pointed out that the old building has been damaged for several years. Although construction of the new building was halted for a long time, work has now resumed. He expressed hope that the construction would be completed soon, providing children with a better educational environment. For now, efforts are being made to continue education with limited resources.
