Income Tax Department Launches ITR Filing Process for Assessment Year 2026-27

New Delhi, May 15: The Income Tax Department announced on Friday that it has released Excel utilities for ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms on the e-filing portal for the financial year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27). This marks the official start of the ITR filing process.

On the social media platform X, the Income Tax Department stated that taxpayers can now access Excel utilities and online filing options for ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms. Additionally, offline utilities have also been announced, allowing taxpayers to fill out offline forms and generate a JSON file. After verification, this file can be uploaded to the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal.

The deadline for non-audit taxpayers to file their returns is July 31. Currently, there are seven different ITR forms available, based on the nature of income and taxpayer category.

ITR-1, known as Sahaj, is for resident individuals with an annual income of up to ₹50 lakh. ITR-4, referred to as Sugam, applies to resident individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and other firms, excluding LLPs, with an annual income of up to ₹50 lakh.

Previously, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) notified revised disclosure rules for ITR forms for the financial year 2026-27. These changes include additional reporting requirements related to long-term capital gains, losses from share buybacks, and certain business transactions.

According to data released by the CBDT, there has been steady growth in India’s net direct tax collection for the financial year 2025-26, which increased by 5.12% compared to the previous year, reaching ₹23,40,406 crore.
