Poor diet, pollution, changing weather, and stress significantly impact health. Both Ayurveda and modern science agree that small daily habits can improve well-being. One of the simplest and most effective habits is walking.

Walking not only strengthens muscles and bones but also improves heart health and helps increase life expectancy.

Ayurveda states that walking balances the body’s energy and vitality, enhances digestion, and reduces mental stress. Scientific research also shows that daily walking can substantially lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Walking is the easiest exercise for people of all ages. When we walk, our heart rate increases, blood circulation improves, and toxins are flushed out of the body. Regular walking helps control blood pressure, lowers bad cholesterol, and maintains a healthy weight. It also benefits mental health, as walking triggers the release of endorphins, hormones that reduce stress and uplift mood.

According to Ayurveda, brisk walking activates the life force (Pranavayu) within the body, boosting energy and strengthening immunity. Experts recommend walking briskly for at least 30 minutes daily to prevent heart attacks.

Studies by the American Heart Foundation and Northwestern Medicine suggest that 30 minutes of brisk walking—approximately 9,000 to 10,000 steps—five days a week is ideal for heart health. This routine improves blood flow, strengthens the heart, and balances blood pressure and cholesterol levels. For those unable to walk this much initially, even 3,800 to 4,000 steps daily can offer benefits, provided the walking is consistent.

Experts highlight that walking is especially beneficial for the elderly. Research shows that people aged 60 and above who walk 6,000 to 9,000 steps daily have a 40 to 50 percent lower risk of heart attack and stroke compared to those walking only 2,000 steps daily.

Walking between 2.5 to 4 miles daily helps keep the heart strong and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Ayurveda also supports that regular and balanced walking maintains the body’s warmth and energy, promoting longevity and good health.
