New Delhi, May 18: The world of space is filled with mysteries and excitement. Have you ever wondered how different and thrilling it can be to sleep in space? Not only sleeping, but maintaining cleanliness in microgravity also presents unique challenges. Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen recently shared insights on these topics.
In an old video, Hansen, who is part of NASA’s Artemis II mission crew, explained that they sleep in swing-like sleeping bags next to each other inside the Orion spacecraft. He described the experience of sleeping in microgravity as next-level.
“We stabilize ourselves using handrails that are installed throughout the spacecraft. We attach our sleeping bags to these handrails. All crew members sleep together, and the cabin is prepared for sleeping,” Hansen noted. Some crew members choose to sleep in seats, while others opt for the upper areas. Christina, for instance, selected the upper spot, where her feet were in the docking tunnel. Although she appeared to hang like a bat, Hansen assured that in microgravity, it is a very comfortable and relaxing position.
In another video, Hansen discussed how astronauts maintain cleanliness in space. Without showers or running water on the spacecraft, staying clean is no small feat. Astronauts use wet wipes for hygiene, electric razors for shaving, and deodorants to combat body odor.
For brushing teeth, they rely on regular toothbrushes and small pouches of water. After brushing, instead of swallowing the water, they must spit it into a towel. Hansen likened this experience to backcountry camping. However, they do have their own toilet facilities.
