Gadchiroli’s Binagunda village, long recognized as a Naxal stronghold, is witnessing a historic transformation as India marks 78 years of independence. For the first time, a Police Assistance Centre has been established in this area, known for its limited administrative presence and Naxalite influence. Remarkably, the centre was constructed within 24 hours, signalling a significant step toward strengthening security measures.
On 26 January 2026, the national flag will be hoisted in Binagunda for the first time ever. This event holds great administrative and symbolic importance, representing democracy, safety, and national unity in a region previously affected by insurgency.
Situated about 17 kilometres from the Laheri sub-post and only 8 kilometres from the Chhattisgarh border, Binagunda has long been a sensitive zone due to Naxalite activities. The absence of permanent security arrangements hindered development, while villagers lived under constant fear. The new Police Assistance Centre not only aims to curb Naxalite operations but also ensures sustained administrative access to the region.
Creating the Police Assistance Centre was a remarkable achievement by Gadchiroli Police. Over 1,050 police personnel, supported by 11 JCB machines, 10 trailers, 5 Poclain excavators, and 40 trucks, worked through challenging forest terrain and rough roads to complete the centre in just 24 hours. This operation reflects the police’s strong strategy and determination.
The centre is secured with a multi-layered arrangement. It houses four senior officers and 56 police personnel, along with two platoons of SRPF Group 19, 79 personnel from CRPF’s 9th Battalion D Company, and eight teams comprising 200 commandos from the Special Task Force. This robust deployment underscores a zero-tolerance approach to lawlessness in Binagunda.
On this historic occasion, senior police officials including Special Police Inspector (Anti-Naxal Operations) Sandeep Patil, Deputy Inspector General of Police Ankit Goyal, and Superintendent of Police Neelotpal, among others, were present. They emphasized that the centre is not merely a security outpost but a gateway to the overall development of the area.
The flag-hoisting ceremony on Republic Day symbolizes liberation from the fear of Naxalism, permanent administrative presence, democratic empowerment, and the beginning of development initiatives. Local residents expressed enthusiasm, sharing that for the first time they feel secure and hopeful about accelerated progress in roads, mobile connectivity, transport, healthcare, and education.
Once known solely as a Naxal stronghold, Binagunda now appears poised to become a model of development. Where fear once prevailed, the tricolour, police, and growth stand as symbols of a new India.
