Guwahati, February 13: Mizoram has achieved a significant milestone in railway connectivity with the arrival of the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train at the Sairang railway station for the first time.
Officials announced on Friday that this train is part of the ‘North East Discovery’ circuit, representing a major step towards enhancing tourism and transport infrastructure in the state.
Kapingal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), stated that this premium tourist train is transporting 81 tourists from various parts of India, as well as from the United States and Nepal, showcasing the state’s growing recognition on both national and international tourism maps.
The Bharat Gaurav Tourist Train arrived at Sairang, located 20 kilometers from Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, on Thursday.
Sharma noted that the historic inauguration of the 51.38-kilometer Bairabi-Sairang railway line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, has been a pivotal moment for tourism in Mizoram, leading to a steady increase in tourist numbers over the past six months.
He emphasized that improved accessibility has attracted both domestic and international visitors, generating employment in the hospitality and related sectors. This development is promoting eco-tourism and cultural tourism, positioning Mizoram as an emerging destination in the Northeast under a vision of inclusive growth and regional integration.
Since the launch of train services on the Bairabi-Sairang route in September 2025, public response has been overwhelming. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express recorded occupancy rates of over 147% and 154% in both directions. Similarly, the Sairang-Guwahati Express and Sairang-Kolkata Express also reported occupancy levels exceeding 100%, clearly indicating strong demand for railway services from Sairang and public acceptance.
Recently, on February 9, 2026, Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off a new train service from Sairang to Silchar in southern Assam. This development has strengthened connectivity in the region, linking Mizoram to essential educational, medical, and commercial hubs in the Barak Valley of Assam.
The Barak Valley in southern Assam includes the districts of Cachar, Shribhoomi (formerly Karimganj), and Hailakandi.
The CPRO added that freight operations on the Bairabi-Sairang section have also accelerated significantly since commissioning. Immediately after the inauguration, the first freight train with 21 cement wagons successfully reached Sairang, marking the beginning of regular freight transport in the state.
Since then, various goods, including cement, sand, stone chips, essential items, and automobiles, have been transported.
