Kohima, April 10 : The Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Sunday said if Hindi is imposed on those who do not know the language without the Central Government making effort to enable them learn it, then that will cause alienation. In an apparent response to on Home Minister Amit Shah’s April 7 statement that Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English and not to local languages, NPF President Shurhozelie Liezietsu said in 1979, the then Prime Minister Morarji Desai in his inaugural speech at the Education Ministers’ Conference in New Delhi had said, “Hindi should be used from the beginning to PG level in education.” Views were sought by the Chairperson from the members present. Nagaland had then expressed that it was not possible in Nagaland, Liezietsu said in a media release. “The Prime Minister then, in a threatening tone, insisted why,” said Liezietsu He added that Nagaland had said, “We want to learn Hindi, but our Naga people do not know Hindi because no one has taught us. As of now, Hindi teachers in Nagaland are mostly ex-servicemen from Assam Regiment. Therefore, if you (PM) come down to Nagaland, you cannot understand our Hindi in as much as we cannot understand your Hindi in Delhi.” Shurhozelie said after over 40 years, “Nagaland still remains almost in the same position because we have not seen any serious efforts on the part of the Central Government towards the development of the language, (notwithstanding) whichever party is in power in Delhi. “We are not against Hindi. But we cannot agree at the moment to use Hindi as an alternative to English in Nagaland because it is impossible in its totality. This is the ground reality and we do not find any other option at the moment,” the release said. AS SSP
