Himanta Biswa Sarma to Resign as Assam Chief Minister Following Election Victory

Guwahati, May 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to meet Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday to formally submit his resignation. This move will pave the way for the formation of a new government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following a remarkable victory in the assembly elections.

During a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma stated that the BJP’s central leadership has appointed senior party leaders as observers for the election of the leader of the BJP legislative party.

“I have just received information that our former national president J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Anil Vij have been appointed as observers for our legislative party leader’s election,” Sarma said.

He added that he would soon discuss the schedule for a meeting of the newly elected legislators with J.P. Nadda. “As soon as we receive instructions from the observers to convene the meeting, we will do so. Only after that will the oath-taking ceremony take place,” he explained.

Sarma further mentioned that he will officially submit his resignation to the governor after the Election Commission announces the final results, ensuring a smooth constitutional process for forming the new government.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a stunning victory in the Assam assembly elections, easily surpassing the majority mark and setting the stage for Sarma to take office for a third consecutive term.

The overall results indicate a decisive mandate in favor of the BJP, which won 82 out of 126 assembly seats. The Congress party lagged behind with 19 seats, while regional parties like the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) secured 10 seats each.

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal each won two seats, marking their first victories, while the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) opened its account with one seat.

With this impressive win, the BJP is poised to form the government in Assam for the third consecutive time, further solidifying its dominance in the northeastern state and delivering a significant blow to the opposition.

Following the announcement of the results, party leaders and workers celebrated across the state, viewing the mandate as a reflection of public trust in the BJP government’s development agenda and governance.

The date for the oath-taking ceremony of the new government is expected to be announced after the BJP legislative party formally elects its leader.
