Himachal Pradesh Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Storms, and Snowfall Predicted from April 18–20
Orange Alert Issued for Six Districts; Farmers and Apple Growers on High Alert
Shimla, April 16, 2025 — Himachal Pradesh is bracing for a significant shift in weather patterns, with the Meteorological Centre Shimla forecasting widespread rainfall, hailstorms, lightning, and snow in several parts of the state from April 18 to 20. An Orange Alert has been issued for six districts — Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Lahaul-Spiti, and Shimla — on April 18 and 19, while a Yellow Alert has been sounded for Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una, Solan, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur.
According to the latest IMD update, thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds of 40–50 km/h and lightning strikes are likely to impact daily life, especially in mid to high-altitude regions. On April 20, a Yellow Alert will remain in effect for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla.
Snowfall Likely in Higher Reaches; Temperatures Expected to Dip
The incoming western disturbance is likely to bring fresh snowfall to upper Himalayan regions, intensifying the cold in tribal and mountainous zones. Meteorologists warn that the weather system will also influence plains and foothill areas, causing a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures, which may provide temporary relief from rising heat.
On April 17, cloudy and unstable weather is expected in districts like Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu, setting the stage for more intense conditions over the following days.
Agricultural Sector on Edge: Threats to Wheat Harvest and Apple Blossom
Farmers across Himachal are growing increasingly concerned. In the lower regions, wheat crops are ripe for harvest, and high winds or rain could severely damage standing fields. Meanwhile, apple orchards in hilly areas are currently in the flowering stage, and the threat of hailstorms has raised alarms about potential crop damage that could impact seasonal yield.
The Meteorological Centre has urged the farming community to take preventive measures and remain updated on local forecasts. Apple growers in particular are advised to cover flowering trees and use anti-hail nets where possible.
