Himachal Pradesh Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Hailstorm, and Gusty Winds Expected from April 18 to 20

Shimla, India — The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather alert for Himachal Pradesh from April 18 to 20, warning of heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and high-speed winds across several districts. A Western Disturbance, coupled with favorable atmospheric conditions, is expected to impact the region, especially in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi.

Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued for Multiple Districts

According to Sandeep Sharma, a scientist at the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, a strong Western Disturbance is moving into the Western Himalayan region, likely to trigger thunderstorms and moisture-laden winds in the state.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 km/h in the upper and middle hills, while lower regions like Hamirpur, Solan, Bilaspur, and Sirmaur may experience winds up to 45 km/h.

Tourists and Local Authorities Urged to Exercise Caution

The weather office has advised tourists visiting popular hill destinations to stay alert during the three-day spell. Rain and hail could impact visibility and travel safety, and local authorities have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance during this period.

Meanwhile, night-time rainfall and cooler temperatures are expected to reduce the heat in the plains while bringing a temporary return of chilly weather in the hills. The IMD estimates a drop of 5–7°C in maximum daytime temperatures during this period.

Potential Damage to Crops and Orchards

The forecast has raised concerns for the agricultural sector, especially in the plains where wheat and vegetables are ready for harvest, and in the hills where apple orchards could face damage from hailstorms. A similar weather event last week already impacted apple saplings in higher elevations.

The state is bracing for widespread disruption across lowland and mountainous regions, with weather officials monitoring developments closely. Residents and farmers are advised to secure outdoor assets and take protective measures for crops and livestock.
