Chief Minister Sukhu assures survey for Kunzum Pass tunnel, aims to enhance connectivity and boost local development in Spiti Valley.

Shimla, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh has pledged the construction of a tunnel under Kunzum Pass in the Lahaul-Spiti district. During a public meeting in Kaza on Wednesday, he announced that a survey and a detailed project report (DPR) would be prepared for this significant infrastructure project.
The tunnel aims to improve year-round road connectivity for both local residents and tourists. In addition to the tunnel, the Chief Minister declared plans to designate the Spiti Valley as a natural agricultural area and explore the possibility of opening a college in Kaza.
To further enhance healthcare services, the government will appoint gynecologists and medical specialists in Kaza. Additionally, a survey will be conducted for the construction of a heliport in Kaza, which is expected to boost tourism and benefit the local community.
Sukhu emphasized that the state government will invest ₹500 crore in the development of Spiti over the coming years. The completion of the Sumdo-Kaza transmission line is targeted within three years at an estimated cost of ₹350 crore, with the aim of doubling the income of Spiti residents.
Addressing the local electricity shortage raised by residents during his visit on April 15, 2023, Sukhu noted that efforts to resolve this issue are now yielding tangible results. He highlighted that approximately 42% of Himachal Pradesh’s geographical area consists of cold desert regions, and the government is focusing on the development and welfare of the population living in these areas.
Moreover, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare of its employees, mentioning a potential release of a dearness allowance installment during Diwali. He also announced the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) to provide social security and respect to employees, with plans to extend it to more staff in the future. However, he pointed out that the central government has withheld ₹1,600 crore annually from Himachal Pradesh due to the implementation of OPS.
Sukhu’s visit aimed to address various local concerns and reinforce the government’s dedication to the region’s development.
