
New Delhi, April 23: Voting is underway for the assembly elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. In West Bengal, the first phase of voting is taking place, while Tamil Nadu will conduct its voting in a single phase. According to the latest figures released by the Election Commission of India (ECI), voter enthusiasm is evident in various states, including Tamil Nadu and West Bengal for assembly elections, as well as in the by-elections in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
As per the data from the Election Commission, approximately 70% voter turnout was recorded in Tamil Nadu by 3 PM. In West Bengal, the first phase of voting has seen the highest enthusiasm, with a remarkable 78.77% turnout reported.
Voting in West Bengal for the first phase began at 7 AM across 152 assembly seats in 16 districts. These districts include Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Malda in North Bengal, and Murshidabad, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum in South Bengal. The second phase of elections for the remaining 142 assembly seats in West Bengal is scheduled for April 29.
Additionally, in the by-elections taking place in Gujarat’s Umreth, a voter turnout of 46.66% has been recorded. In Maharashtra, the by-elections in Rahuri and Baramati have seen turnouts of 39.60% and 40.36%, respectively.
By 1 PM, the voter turnout in Gujarat’s Umreth was at 37.14%. In Baramati, Maharashtra, it was 31.91%, while Rahuri recorded a turnout of 29.67%. In Baramati, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar is contesting, and her victory is considered almost certain. However, the results will be announced on May 4, providing a clearer picture of the outcomes.
Strict security measures have been implemented at all polling stations, and the voting process is proceeding peacefully. The Election Commission has urged voters to participate in large numbers to ensure their involvement in this grand festival of democracy.
