Heavy Snowfall Closes Roads in Shimla, Police Issue Travel Advisory

Shimla is witnessing heavy snowfall, causing major roads in the district’s upper areas to shut down. Key locations including Kufri, Narkanda, Khidki, and Khadapathar have become inaccessible, severely affecting vehicle movement. In response, Shimla Police have issued a travel advisory for commuters and tourists.

This snowfall marks the first significant snow event of the season, bringing excitement to many visitors and locals. However, it has also created hazardous conditions. Police have warned that icy roads and accumulated snow increase the risk of vehicles skidding, leading to a higher chance of accidents.

Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel. In cases of emergency travel, commuters are advised to select safer alternative routes and exercise extreme caution. For urgent assistance, contacting the nearest police station or dialing 112 is recommended.

The Meteorological Department forecasts continued snowfall in the upper regions over the next few days, potentially worsening road conditions and slipperiness. This advisory comes at a time when Shimla is experiencing a surge in tourist arrivals. While the city is beautifully covered in snow, icy roads and black ice have disrupted traffic flow. Power outages have also been reported in some areas.

Shimla Police have recommended the use of four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with chains, but emphasise avoiding non-essential travel. The police advisory prioritises safety, encouraging both residents and tourists to enjoy the snowfall from indoors, such as homes or hotels.

Those who must travel are urged to stay updated with weather reports and strictly follow police instructions to ensure their safety during this snowfall period.
