Jammu, January 27: Intense snowfall began early Tuesday morning in Jammu and Kashmir, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain in some areas of the union territory. This severe weather has led to the closure of key roads, impacting travel and daily life.
An official from the traffic department confirmed that the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) is closed due to fresh snowfall inside and around the Navayu Tunnel. No vehicles are permitted to travel between Jammu and Srinagar in either direction. Additionally, Mughal Road, SSG Road, and Sinthan Road remain shut.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid travelling on these roads until they are fully cleared and declared safe for traffic.
The current period of intense winter cold, locally known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ started on December 21 and will end on January 30. The recent snowfall towards the end of Chillai Kalan has eased concerns among Kashmiris about water sources for the coming months.
Tourists visiting Kashmir expressed mixed feelings about the weather and travel conditions. One visitor told news agencies, “It feels wonderful to be in Kashmir with snowfall all around. Everyone should come and see this place. The weather has become very pleasant due to the snow. We are here with family, but closed routes have caused some difficulties.”
Another tourist said, “After a long time, snowfall is happening again. This is a joyful moment for us, and we came here for this experience. The traffic police are providing great assistance to ensure people do not face problems.”
A third tourist shared, “I had heard a lot about Kashmir and have seen it before. It truly is paradise. Until yesterday, there was no snow, and I thought my luck was bad. But this morning, I saw heavy snowfall everywhere, with everything covered in white. Kashmir really is heaven.”
The snowfall and road closures are expected to continue affecting life in the region until weather conditions improve and roads are cleared for travel.
