Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued for Northeast India Amid Scorching Heat in North India

New Delhi, April 23, 2025: While much of North and Central India reels under an intense heatwave, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall and thunderstorm warning for several northeastern and southern states until the end of April. The forecast comes as a relief to some regions but also raises concerns over extreme weather events including hailstorms and strong winds.

Northeast India Braces for Heavy Downpours

According to the IMD, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are expected to receive heavy rainfall till April 27, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are set to experience similar weather conditions from April 26 to 27. The region may also witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds up to 60 km/h, raising the risk of localized flooding and infrastructure disruptions.

Heatwave Continues in North and Central India

Despite recent showers, the heat is back in full swing across northern and central India. The IMD warns that heatwave conditions will persist in Northwest and Central India until April 29, and in eastern India until April 26. Maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 2-3ยฐC over the next seven days, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

Gujarat, in particular, will continue to experience stable temperatures for the next five days, after which the mercury is projected to spike by another three degrees Celsius.

Western Disturbance to Impact Himalayan Region

A fresh Western Disturbance is set to impact the Western Himalayan region starting April 24, bringing rain and thunderstorms to Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand through April 26. The IMD has also issued warnings for lightning and gusty winds during this period.

South and East India Weather Update

In South India, regions such as Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and Yanam are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall over the next seven days, with isolated thunderstorms and lightning activity. In Jharkhand, hailstorm activity is expected on April 27, while Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal have also seen thunderstorms and showers in the past 24 hours.

States including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh recorded thunderstorm activity, while parts of Madhya Maharashtra reported hailstorms. The IMD has urged people in affected areas to take necessary precautions and stay updated with local advisories.
