Heavy Rain Forecast for 17 Districts in Tamil Nadu, NDRF Team Deployed to Chennai
Heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadus 17 districts, prompting NDRF deployment in Chennai as flooding concerns rise.

Chennai, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : Heavy rainfall is anticipated across 17 districts in Tamil Nadu this Sunday, according to the meteorological department. Areas including Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram are likely to experience significant downpours. Continuous rain has already led to flooding in low-lying regions of the state capital.
The forecast indicates that the rainfall is attributed to an atmospheric circulation over northern Tamil Nadu and adjacent southern coastal Andhra Pradesh. This weather system is expected to bring rain to several northern, western, and central districts of the state.
In addition to Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram, districts such as Chengalpattu, Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Tiruvannamalai, and Erode are also on alert for heavy rain on Sunday.
The warning comes as Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu are already experiencing heavy rainfall. Flooding in the capital’s low-lying areas has raised concerns about worsening conditions if the rain continues.
In response to the situation, a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will be deployed to Chennai as a precaution. The team, drawn from the battalion located near Arakkonam in Civilkuppam, will bolster preparations for rescue operations amid heavy rain and potential flooding. Emergency response measures are being implemented to address any worsening conditions.
The meteorological department has also predicted heavy rain across a large portion of the state on Monday, particularly in several coastal and interior districts. Areas such as Tiruchirappalli, Nilgiri, Coimbatore, and Tirunelveli may face thunderstorms and lightning alongside heavy rainfall.
Forecasts for the next two days suggest that rainfall will impact northern districts already experiencing rain, as well as the Cauvery delta and parts of southern Tamil Nadu. Both days’ forecasts include Chennai and its surrounding districts.
Given the reports of flooding in the capital, the NDRF’s deployment is part of a strategy to prepare for potential emergencies. Should flooding occur due to heavy rain, the team will assist in rescue operations. Currently, focus remains on readiness in Chennai, while the forecast for Monday indicates that coastal areas and other districts in the state should also remain vigilant.
