Chennai, May 3: Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing a heat wave, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius in several districts. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across many areas over the next three days.
According to the regional meteorological center in Chennai, at least 12 locations in Tamil Nadu and neighboring Puducherry have recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 37.8 degrees Celsius, indicating a rise in heat. Vellore reported the highest temperature at 42.2 degrees Celsius, the hottest in the state.
Temperatures around 40 degrees were noted at Tiruchirappalli, Chennai (Meenambakkam), and Madurai airports. In Madurai city, Tirupattur, and Dharmapuri, temperatures hovered around 39.4 degrees Celsius. Districts like Erode, Karur, Paramathi, and Tiruttani recorded temperatures near 38.9 degrees, while Nagapattinam saw around 38.3 degrees.
Palayamkottai and Puducherry also reached temperatures of 37.8 degrees. Chennai is expected to see maximum temperatures close to 40 degrees on Sunday.
The weather department has warned that increased humidity will lead to a heightened perception of heat. Meteorologists suggest that this combination of temperature and humidity could result in heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in various locations over the next three days.
While the rain may provide some relief from the heat, it also brings the risk of strong winds and lightning. The IMD has advised the public to exercise caution during the afternoon. Elderly individuals, children, and those with health issues are urged to stay out of direct sunlight and stay hydrated.
Officials indicate that this period marks the peak of heat and pre-monsoon activities, leading to unstable weather conditions. Fluctuations between heat and rain are expected to continue in the coming days.
