Health Benefits of ‘Tiranga’ Diet for Body and Mind

New Delhi: Republic Day on January 26 is not only a day to honour democracy and the values of the Constitution but also a reminder of the importance of a healthy lifestyle inspired by our national flag. The tricolour – saffron, white, and green – symbolizes more than patriotism; these colours also encourage a balanced and nutritious diet that promotes physical and mental well-being.

Significance of the Tiranga Diet

Experts suggest that adopting a ‘Tiranga’ diet, which includes foods representing the three colours of the national flag, can help keep both body and mind fit and active. This diet is simple, nutritious, and balanced, made from easily available ingredients in every household.

The saffron (kesariya) colour is represented by protein-rich foods such as pulses (chana, rajma, arhar), soya chunks, or eggs. White is symbolised by energy-giving foods like rice, roti, curd, and milk products. Green includes vitamin- and mineral-rich vegetables such as spinach, fenugreek, moong vegetable, mustard greens, and other leafy greens.

Nutrition and Immunity from Colourful Fruits and Vegetables

Incorporating brightly coloured fruits and vegetables in the diet provides essential vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants. These nutrients strengthen the immune system, protect cells from free radical damage, and reduce risks of serious conditions like stroke.

Saffron-coloured fruits like oranges, peaches, apricots, mangoes, and papayas are rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and potassium, which enhance immunity and improve eyesight. White fruits such as coconut, dragon fruit, pears, pineberries, and lychee contain potassium, fibre, beta-glucans, and other nutrients that aid digestion, stimulate metabolism, control cholesterol, and support heart health, while also helping prevent cancers.

Green fruits and vegetables such as green apples, grapes, lemons, avocado, custard apple, okra, bitter gourd, and ridge gourd are high in potassium, vitamin K, and antioxidants. They protect the heart, support blood circulation, strengthen eyes, bones, and teeth, and provide detoxification and energy boosting benefits.

Guidelines for a Healthy Lifestyle

Experts recommend consuming the Tiranga diet at least three times daily for children and two to three times for adults to maintain balanced nutrition and robust health. The fibre-rich fruits help reduce cancer risks, while those with diabetes or obesity should opt for fruits low in calories and natural sugars.

This approach not only supports individual health but also contributes to nation building by ensuring citizens remain strong and active.
