Mumbai, April 27: Punjab’s Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has openly supported the decision made by Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party. Kejriwal announced that he would not participate in the ongoing hearings in the Delhi High Court presided over by Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma. This case is linked to the controversial excise policy in Delhi.
Kejriwal expressed his lack of faith in receiving justice from the court. He stated his decision to neither appear in court himself nor fight the case through his lawyer. He described this move as a step in line with Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of ‘Satyagraha.’
In a social media post, Kejriwal wrote, “With complete humility and utmost respect for the judiciary, I have sent the following letter to Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma, informing her that, following Gandhi’s principle of ‘Satyagraha,’ it is not possible for me to pursue this matter in her court, whether I appear personally or through a lawyer.”
He added, “This difficult decision comes after reaching the clear conclusion that the proceedings in her court do not fulfill the fundamental principle that ‘justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.’ My participation in these proceedings, whether personally or through a lawyer, will not lead to any meaningful outcome.”
Re-sharing this statement, Harjot Singh Bains justified Kejriwal’s stance, stating, “Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.” This is not merely a preference but the foundation of law. When this is absent, withdrawing participation is not a weakness; it is the voice of conscience. I salute this principled stance.”
It is noteworthy that just days ago, Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma rejected Kejriwal’s petition requesting her recusal from the case. The court denied that request, prompting Kejriwal to adopt this new approach.
