Haridwar Tightens Checks on Non-Hindu Vendors Ahead of Kumbh 2027

Haridwar’s Har Ki Pauri area is witnessing increased security and strictness as preparations for Kumbh 2027 intensify. Authorities have recently launched a special checking drive focused on identifying non-Hindu shopkeepers and vendors operating near the sacred ghats.

The initiative has been led by local temple priests, who have requested vendors and shop owners around the ghats to present their Aadhaar cards for verification. This move aims to confirm their religious identity.

According to local sources, the campaign is being carried out under the guidance of Shri Ganga Sabha. The organisation believes it is essential to maintain strict oversight of activities in and around Har Ki Pauri, a highly revered site. Especially with the approaching Kumbh Mela, ensuring that only Hindus engage in commercial and other activities at the ghats is considered crucial.

During the verification process, vendors and stall operators are asked about their identity and asked to produce Aadhaar cards. If found to be non-Hindu, they are instructed not to conduct business in the ghat area. While some have expressed discomfort about this checking, the priests involved emphasise that the measure is deeply connected to religious faith and sanctity.

Saints and priests have highlighted recent incidents where certain individuals allegedly disrespected devotees’ sentiments, leading to tensions and disturbances. They argue that the presence of such elements at a sacred site undermines religious decorum and traditions.

The saint community stresses that the Kumbh is not merely a festival but one of the largest religious gatherings, attracting millions of devotees. Haridwar, often called the gateway to the land of the gods, must preserve the sanctity of its ghats and the Kumbh area. Therefore, restricting entry and trade activities of non-Hindus in this area is seen as a necessary step to uphold religious values.

This drive reflects ongoing efforts to prepare Haridwar’s spiritual sites for a smooth and respectful celebration of the upcoming Kumbh Mela, ensuring the devotion and faith of millions are honoured appropriately.
