Bengaluru, April 2 : Amid some Hindu organisations calling for a ban on purchasing halal meat, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said all deputy commissioners and superintendent of police have been instructed to take necessary steps to ensure peaceful celebration of Hosa Todaku. “Festivals should be celebrated without any disruption in law and order,” he told reporters at his RT Nagar residence as the Ugadi’s next day festival began. The officials also have been instructed to hold peace meetings in their areas to ensure peaceful celebrations, Bommai said. A group of Hindu organisations have intensified their call to boycott buying halal meat during Hosa Tadaku festival in the state. They have requested Hindus to buy jhatka meat for the festival. While both are methods of slaughtering animals for consumption, Halal is mostly practised by the Muslim comm ty. Term ‘Halal’ in Arabic means — fit for human consumption. It involves a swipe with a sharp blade across the animal’s neck and then it is slaughtered slowly. The process involves the complete draining out of the animal’s blood. Whereas in Jhatka, (meaning swift in Hindi), the animal’s head is severed in one single blow and the animal dies instantly. No blood loss while its alive. Many BJP leaders have also endorsed the call. The party’s National General Secretary CT Ravi said the halal is nothing but economic jihad of the Muslims. It is a well-designed policy to not purchase any products from non-Muslim comm ties. Both Bommai and Home Minister Araga Jnanendra clearly had said that the issue is nothing to do with rules and regulations, but about practice. However, necessary steps will be taken to maintain law and order arising out of such a call, they had wanted. BDN ING
