Guwahati High Court Orders Assam University Vice-Chancellor to Resign
The Guwahati High Court has directed Assam Universitys Vice-Chancellor to resign over UGC rule violations, raising concerns about appointment processes.

Guwahati, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : The Guwahati High Court has instructed Rajeev Mohan Pant, the Vice-Chancellor of Assam University in Silchar, to resign due to alleged violations of University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. This ruling has raised questions about the appointment process for top administrative positions at central universities, particularly regarding adherence to UGC eligibility criteria and procedures.
The court issued its directive on October 14, prompting scrutiny of the appointment process. Reports indicate that the appointment was challenged on the grounds that UGC guidelines were not followed. This controversy has also drawn attention to the role of the Ministry of Education, as the appointment of central university heads falls under broader regulatory frameworks governing higher education institutions.
Registrar Pradosh Kiranath confirmed that senior officials in New Delhi have been informed about the situation. The university is awaiting a response from the central government before determining its next steps.
Additionally, the court hinted at the possibility of recovering salaries already paid to the Vice-Chancellor in relation to the dispute. However, the exact legal implications of the court’s order and the administrative actions taken by the university will depend on official communications and subsequent proceedings.
This development comes at a time when compliance with UGC regulations for appointments to senior academic and administrative positions remains a critical issue across universities in India. Assam University plays a vital role in providing education to students in Assam and other parts of the Northeast, and any changes in its leadership could significantly impact its administration and ongoing academic activities. Further clarity on the situation is expected following responses from the university and relevant central authorities.
