Peshawar, August 16: A police constable was tragically shot dead in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district of Bannu on Sunday. The incident occurred as he was returning home from duty.
According to reports from the prominent English daily Dawn, constables Saifullah Khan and Mirzabet Shah were attacked by unidentified gunmen as they entered their village in Surani. The assailants fired multiple rounds, resulting in Khan’s immediate death at the scene.
In response to the attack, police have launched a search operation to apprehend the suspects. Bannu’s District Police Officer, Captain (Retired) Muhammad Furqan Bilal, stated that security measures have been intensified in the area following the incident.
This shooting comes just two days after an attack on a police post in the Bajaur district’s Barang tehsil, which resulted in one officer’s death and another’s injury. Earlier this month, a suicide bombing at the Kabal police station in Swat killed 14 people, including police officials, and injured 18 others.
On July 30, an assault on a police checkpoint in Hangu resulted in the deaths of nine officers. Additionally, a joint security operation in Swat’s Kabal and Matta tehsils on July 29 led to the deaths of one policeman and four members of a village defense committee.
According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), July saw a staggering 112 security personnel killed in alleged terrorist attacks, marking the highest monthly death toll since January 2023 and the second highest in over a decade. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, fatalities rose from 75 in June to 154 in July, representing a 105% increase. The number of injured individuals also surged from 60 to 98, with the deaths of security personnel in the main KP area rising from 12 to 38.
