Ahmedabad, August 3: The Indian Railways has successfully transported a donated heart via the Vande Bharat Express for the second time in just two days. Officials reported that the heart was brought from Ankleshwar to Ahmedabad for a critical heart transplant operation.
The heart was transported on August 2 aboard Train Number 20901, which runs from Mumbai Central to Gandhinagar Capital. It was extracted from the Jayaben Modi Multi-Speciality Hospital in Ankleshwar.
This heart is set to be implanted at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Center in Ahmedabad. For this operation, the Vande Bharat Express made a special stop at the Ankleshwar railway station, ensuring the organ was securely placed in Coach E-01 without delay.
Upon arrival in Ahmedabad, railway commercial staff, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and Gujarat police created a green corridor from Platform 1 to facilitate the swift transport of the heart to U.N. Mehta Hospital.
According to Western Railway, the transplant will be performed by a specialized medical team at the U.N. Mehta Institute. This operation follows another historic heart transplant that occurred two days prior, where a living heart was transported from Surat to Ahmedabad using the same Vande Bharat service.
Railway and medical officials labeled that mission as “the first transport of a donated heart by train in India.” Despite heavy rains and flooding in parts of Gujarat, the organ reached Ahmedabad in approximately two hours.
This operation demonstrates that high-speed rail can significantly aid in sensitive organ transplants. Timely delivery of donated organs is crucial to prevent deterioration.
Railway officials noted that the speed and punctuality of the Vande Bharat Express are instrumental in quickly delivering donated organs, reducing delays that could impact transplant outcomes.
Western Railway stated that it coordinated closely with hospitals, state police, medical teams, and railway officials to ensure the smooth completion of Sunday’s operation.
In a statement, the Indian Railways reaffirmed its commitment to serving humanity and saving lives, highlighting the critical role played by the Vande Bharat Express in swiftly delivering living hearts.
Officials remarked, “The successful transport of donated hearts consecutively showcases that the modern, high-speed, and timely services of the railway extend beyond passenger transport to emergency medical services.”
Western Railway also expressed its commitment to providing all possible assistance for similar humanitarian and life-saving activities in the future.
