Gold or Silver on Dhanteras? A Guide for Small Investors on Choices, Benefits, and Risks

As Dhanteras approaches, small investors weigh the pros and cons of investing in gold versus silver.

New Delhi, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : The festival of lights, Diwali, is just around the corner, beginning with Dhanteras on November 6. On this auspicious day, many people purchase gold, silver, and other precious metals.

Buying gold and silver on Dhanteras is not just a tradition; it is also considered a significant investment opportunity. However, for small investors, the decision often boils down to whether to buy gold or silver. This choice should be based on budget, risk tolerance, and investment goals, rather than just emotions.

Gold has long been viewed as a reliable means of wealth preservation. Its demand remains consistent, and it can be easily liquidated when necessary. However, purchasing jewelry incurs additional costs such as making charges and taxes, which can increase the overall expense.

Experts suggest that from an investment perspective, options like gold coins, gold bars, gold ETFs, and digital gold are more practical. Although gold prices can fluctuate, they are generally considered less volatile compared to silver.

On the other hand, silver may offer a more affordable option for small investors. With a limited budget, investors can acquire a larger quantity of silver. Additionally, growing industrial demand in sectors such as solar energy, electronics, and electric vehicles provides extra support for silver prices. However, silver’s price volatility is higher than that of gold, influenced by both investment demand and industrial activity. While there may be opportunities for quick profits, the associated risks are also greater.

Market experts advise that if your objective is to preserve wealth and seek relatively stable investments, gold may be the better choice. Conversely, if you have a limited budget, wish to buy more metal, and can tolerate market fluctuations, silver could be worth considering.

Interestingly, gold is currently about 25% lower than its record high, while silver has dropped approximately 55%. Many investors see this as a buying opportunity.

Experts recommend that instead of making a lump-sum purchase solely on Dhanteras, investors should consider their financial needs and timeframes when making decisions.

For those who want to avoid concerns about purity, security, and storage, gold ETFs and silver ETFs can also be viable options. These allow for investment through exchanges without the need to hold physical metal.
