Gautam Gambhir Receives Heros Welcome at Delhi Airport After T20 World Cup Victory

New Delhi, March 10: The Indian cricket team clinched the T20 World Cup 2026 title on Sunday, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. Following this historic victory, head coach Gautam Gambhir was warmly welcomed at Delhi Airport.

A large crowd of fans gathered to greet Gambhir, who was adorned with a garland. He arrived at the airport with his wife and two daughters. Amid tight security, he was escorted to his vehicle, from where he headed home. This win marks the second ICC trophy for Team India since Gambhir took on the role of head coach. Previously, the team won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

In the final match, India batted first, scoring 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 89 runs off 46 balls, including 5 fours and 8 sixes. Abhishek Sharma contributed a quick 52 runs off 21 balls, while Ishan Kishan added 54 runs from 25 balls. In the closing overs, Shivam Dube made a significant impact, scoring 26 runs off just 8 balls, helping India achieve the highest score in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

Chasing a target of 256 runs, New Zealand was bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs. Tim Seifert was the top scorer for the Kiwi team with 52 runs, while Mitchell Santner contributed 43 runs. Jasprit Bumrah excelled with the ball for India, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs in 4 overs. With this victory, India became the first country to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, and under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, the team made history as the first to win the T20 World Cup consecutively.
