Gautam Gambhir Emphasizes Right Decisions Over Popularity as Indias T20 Coach

Gautam Gambhir, Indias T20 coach, prioritizes making the right decisions over seeking popularity during the teams tour of New Zealand.

Hamilton, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that his role is not to please everyone. Instead, he focuses on making the right decisions while managing a major T20 team. Currently, the Indian team is on a tour of New Zealand, where they have taken a commanding 3-1 lead in a five-match T20 series.

Ahead of the fifth match at Seddon Park, Gambhir spoke with broadcasters, stating, “First and foremost, my job is not to make everyone happy. My responsibility is to make the right decisions, not the popular ones. I am here for that purpose. In today’s age of social media and public discussions, things can be quite different.”

He added, “It’s easy to make a popular decision. However, making the right choice is more important. It’s also crucial to ensure that players feel completely confident within the dressing room. As you mentioned, there is a lot of talent in the team. The players have performed exceptionally well for a long time, so they certainly deserve more opportunities. We are moving forward in this series with that mindset.”

Gambhir praised the team’s performance throughout the series, especially given the busy T20 schedule over the past month. India wrapped up a five-match T20 series against the West Indies at home on October 17 before heading to New Zealand. The series against New Zealand began on October 22, where India won the first three matches under completely different conditions.

He remarked, “Clearly, we had very little time to prepare. We finished our last match on the 17th and flew out on the 18th. We only had one practice session. The players deserve credit for how quickly they adapted to the conditions. Many players are here for the first time. We all know how dangerous New Zealand can be on their home turf.”

When asked about keeping players motivated, the head coach emphasized, “When you are playing for your country, there is no room for complacency. This is an international match, so you must give your best. Everyone knows how few people get the chance to represent their country. For me, every match is an opportunity to do something different, learn something new, and improve myself. We view the game from this perspective. In my opinion, no match is a ‘dead rubber,’ and all our players share this belief.”
