Azamgarh, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : In Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, police have arrested a man who posed as a Circle Officer (CO) and defrauded a victim of ₹90,000 under the guise of facilitating a liquor license.
The suspect, identified as Sanjay, allegedly approached the victim in the Ghamirpur police jurisdiction, claiming he could secure a liquor contract for a fee. He demanded a total of ₹3.20 lakh but managed to collect ₹90,000 in cash before his scheme unraveled.
On September 1, Sanjay, dressed in police uniform, even conducted a video call with the victim to bolster his claims. However, the victim grew suspicious and conducted further inquiries, which revealed that Sanjay was not a police officer. Following this discovery, the victim filed a complaint at the Ghamirpur police station on Thursday.
Chirag Jain, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) in Azamgarh, provided details about the arrest. On Friday, a joint team from the Ghamirpur police and the Cyber Cell apprehended Sanjay near the Rani Pur Rajmon Mor area based on a tip-off.
Sanjay, approximately 40 years old and a resident of Magarwa in Ghamirpur, was found in possession of two forged police identification cards, a fake liquor allocation letter, a complete Deputy Superintendent of Police uniform, and a mobile phone.
Authorities are now investigating further, as there are indications that Sanjay may have scammed additional victims. The police have formed a team to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter.
