Beijing, June 23: The China Meteorological Administration announced on Tuesday that four meteorological centers have been included in the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) list of century-old weather stations. The centers located in Guiyang, Tangku, Tengchong, and Yuyang have now increased the total number of WMO-recognized century-old meteorological centers in China to 22.
These four centers have a continuous weather observation history spanning over 100 years. The Tangku and Yuyang centers began their meteorological observations in 1909, Tengchong in 1911, and Guiyang in 1920.
An official from the China Meteorological Administration stated that these centers have compiled significant scientific data related to weather and climate based on their long-term observations. This data plays a crucial role in studying climate change trends across various regions of China, monitoring extreme weather and climate events, and enhancing weather forecasting services.
The official added that the China Meteorological Administration will seize this opportunity to strengthen the infrastructure, operation, and maintenance systems of the weather centers, as well as the preservation of observational environments and historical records. Continuous improvements in the quality of observational work will be pursued to better utilize long-term weather-related data for climate change research, disaster risk reduction, and economic and social development.
