England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chairman Richard Thompson expressed grief over Smith’s death, saying, “Robin Smith was a player who bravely faced some of the world’s fastest bowlers. His performances made England fans feel proud and thoroughly entertained them. He played a memorable innings of 167 not out off 163 balls against Australia in an ODI match at Edgbaston in 1993. His record at Hampshire is outstanding. We are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. Our prayers are with his friends, family and loved ones.”
