Former Elite Force Member Arrested for Human Trafficking in Pakistan

Islamabad, April 4: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan confirmed on Friday the arrest of a human trafficker involved in a boat accident in Greece in June 2023. This individual was listed in the FIA’s Red Book and previously served as a constable in Pakistan’s elite force.

According to Pakistan’s leading daily, Dawn, the trafficker was arrested in January after attacking an FIA team during a raid in the village of Majra Shumali, located in the Gujarat district. He was named in charges of attempted murder and other offenses.

A senior FIA official reported that the trafficker, known as Waqas Ali, alias Waqas Butt, was apprehended by the FIA Composite Circle in Gujarat. He is included in the 2025 Red Book and is a declared criminal in several FIA cases.

Dawn cited the FIA official stating that the suspect was directly linked to the 2023 Libya ship incident. He allegedly extorted nearly three million Pakistani rupees from affected families, promising to smuggle them from Libya to Greece via illegal maritime routes. The accused is a former elite force constable who was dismissed by the Gujarat police in 2023.

Last month, the FIA detained two passengers at Multan International Airport for allegedly attempting to use Umrah visas to enter Europe.

An FIA spokesperson indicated that the immigration staff took action during routine screening of outgoing passengers at Multan Airport. The two Pakistani citizens, Sikandar Alam and Noor Islam, were reportedly traveling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah. However, initial investigations raised suspicions, leading to their referral for secondary screening.

During questioning, Sikandar Alam and Noor Islam revealed that their actual destination was not Saudi Arabia but Spain. FIA officials noted that this recent case aligns with warnings issued by FIA headquarters about individuals attempting to illegally enter Europe using Umrah visas.
