Former BJP Leader Mohanlumo Kikon Appointed NPP General Secretary

Shillong, February 28: Mohanlumo Kikon, a former BJP legislator and national spokesperson from Nagaland, has been appointed as the General Secretary (Political) of the National People’s Party (NPP) with immediate effect, party sources announced on Friday.

According to NPP sources in Shillong, the appointment was made by the party’s National President and Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma.

In his new role, Kikon will be responsible for structured coordination and dialogue with various political parties and stakeholders across the North-East states. His duties will include facilitating strategic alignment and consultations to achieve the vision of ‘One North-East.’

As per an NPP statement, he will coordinate with all state presidents and office bearers in the region to review political changes, assess electoral preparations, and resolve inter-state organizational matters.

Kikon will also engage in regular consultations with elected members, representatives, and other stakeholders to ensure policy alignment and political coordination.

The statement further noted, “He has been tasked with designing and supervising dedicated political programs, consultations, conventions, and outreach initiatives aimed at enhancing the party’s presence and reach. All state units and party officials are instructed to extend full cooperation to him.”

Kikon, a former member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the Bhandari constituency, was previously associated with the BJP, where he served as a national spokesperson. Before resigning from the party, he was appointed as the BJP in-charge for Mizoram.

Transitioning from a scholar, poet, and social activist to a political leader, Kikon resigned from the BJP’s primary and active membership on August 7, 2025. At that time, he was the sole national spokesperson for the BJP from the North-East.

Meanwhile, on November 4, 2025, the NPP and the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) announced their decision to form a new regional political front under a common banner following a summit with several other regional parties and leaders in New Delhi.
