Bengaluru is gearing up for the presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27, set to be unveiled on February 1 at 11 am. With less than two weeks remaining, experts from various fields have shared their expectations and suggestions, emphasising the need for sustained economic growth and increased employment opportunities across the country.
Emphasis on Technology Adoption in MSMEs
Speaking to Daily Kiran, Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, CEO of Karnataka Digital Economy Mission, highlighted the importance of the government focusing on rapid technology adoption by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the upcoming budget. According to Gupta, MSMEs in India, especially those operating in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, contribute approximately 1.5 trillion dollars to the economy with a growth rate of 10 percent.
He added that integrating technology could boost this growth rate to 18 percent. To achieve this, Gupta stressed the need for a dedicated policy from the central government, which he hopes will be introduced in this budget.
Creation of Digital Economy Zones in Smaller Cities
Gupta further pointed out the necessity of establishing digital economy zones in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. He believes that such zones could give rise to about 100 growth engines, significantly accelerating regional development and economic activity beyond metropolitan areas.
Supporting Startups to Spur Employment
Highlighting the startup ecosystem, Gupta noted that there are currently around 100,000 startups in smaller cities. He recommended the introduction of a scheme to increase this number to 500,000, which would substantially enhance employment opportunities across the country.
This year marks a unique occasion as the Union Budget will be presented on a Sunday for the first time since 2000. Previously, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget on a Saturday in 2025, and similarly, the late Arun Jaitley had presented the budget on a Saturday in 2015.
