New Delhi: The death toll in the fire incident at Anandapur, Kolkata, has risen to 25. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
PM Modi took to the social media platform X to convey his condolences, calling the recent fire in Anandapur “extremely sad and painful.” He extended his heartfelt sympathies to those who lost their loved ones and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
The Prime Minister further stated that compensation from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) would be provided, with Rs 2 lakh allotted to each bereaved family and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
Officials from the state disaster management department confirmed that one more person has succumbed to injuries, increasing the total fatalities to 25. Several individuals remain unaccounted for, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further.
The fire broke out on the morning of January 26 inside a warehouse where many labourers were asleep. Initial reports from the state fire service and forensic team indicated that the blaze originated not from the ‘Wow Momo’ factory, but from a nearby warehouse belonging to Pushpanjali Decorators. However, the owner of the Pushpanjali warehouse, Gangadhar Das, who was arrested following the incident, claimed that the fire started at the momo factory first.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and directed the district magistrate to submit an action report at the earliest. This step follows complaints alleging serious human rights violations at the Wow Momo factory in Anandapur.
