Kolkata, May 20: Preparations for the re-election in the crucial Falta Assembly seat of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district are in full swing ahead of Thursday’s voting. Sources from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office reported that the deployment of polling staff and other arrangements at the dispersal centers are proceeding smoothly.
An official from the CEO’s office stated that continuous monitoring is being conducted to ensure a peaceful, fair, and transparent voting process. Extensive security measures have been implemented across the entire assembly area, with 35 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed, marking a significant security arrangement for a single assembly constituency.
Voting for the second phase of elections in the Falta Assembly seat took place on April 29. However, several complaints of electoral irregularities were reported on polling day, including allegations that buttons for BJP candidates were covered with white tape on several Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
In response to these complaints, special election observer Subhrat Gupta, who is also an advisor to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, visited Falta to investigate the matter. Based on his report, the Election Commission ordered a re-election in the entire Falta Assembly area. The re-election is scheduled for May 21, with counting set for May 24.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan announced on Tuesday that he would withdraw from the electoral contest, expressing confidence in the development package announced by Chief Minister Adhikari for Falta.
However, the CEO’s office clarified that Jahangir Khan’s name will remain on the EVM as the Trinamool Congress candidate for the re-election. An official stated that since voting had already occurred on April 29, there would be no changes to the arrangements, including candidates, for the re-election on May 21.
