FC Barcelona Extends Hansi Flicks Contract Until 2028

Madrid, May 18: FC Barcelona has officially confirmed that head coach Hansi Flick has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the club until at least June 2028. This announcement follows Flick’s statement during a press conference last week, where he revealed that he had agreed to a new deal before the La Liga match against Alavés.

A club statement read, “FC Barcelona and Hansi Flick have reached an agreement to extend his contract, ensuring he remains with the club until June 30, 2028, with an option for an additional season.”

According to reports from ‘Xinhua’, this extension means that the 61-year-old coach could guide the club for five more years. However, Flick has not ruled out the possibility of staying longer if both parties are satisfied.

Flick joined Barcelona in July 2024, succeeding Xavi Hernandez. In his first season, he led the club to victories in the Spanish Super Cup, La Liga, and Copa del Rey.

This season, Barcelona has secured another Spanish Super Cup and maintained its league title, finishing 11 points ahead of Real Madrid with one match remaining. Flick achieved this success while the team played for two seasons at the less popular Olympic Stadium, as Camp Nou underwent renovations.

One of Flick’s notable achievements has been integrating young players into the first team. Players like Pau Cubarsi, Lamine Yamal, and Marc Bernal have become key members during a period when Barcelona faced financial constraints affecting player transfers and salaries. Overall, Flick has provided opportunities for 13 academy players to play in the first team over the past two years.

Now, the German coach is focused on winning the Champions League, as Barcelona was eliminated in the semifinals last season by Inter Milan and faced an exit in the quarterfinals this year at the hands of Atlético Madrid. Born on February 24, 1965, in Heidelberg (then part of West Germany), Flick began his managerial career with Viktoria Bammental (1996–2000), GSG Hoffenheim (2000–2005), and Bayern Munich (2019–2021), before taking the helm at Barcelona in 2024. He also coached the German national team from 2021 to 2023.
