According to CBS News, emergency responders received the first call just before 11 a.m. local time. In a Monday night press conference, plant officials confirmed that the body of the last missing worker had been recovered from the debris. Earlier, US Steel Clairton’s Executive Vice President and Chief Manufacturing Officer Scott Buckiso confirmed the deaths of two workers in the blast.

Allegheny County Police said the initial explosion was extremely powerful, followed by a second blast that caused comparatively less damage. One of the victims was identified as 39-year-old Timothy Quinn, while the other’s identity had not been confirmed as of Monday night. Ten injured workers were taken to local hospitals, with five reported to be in serious but stable condition.

In a statement issued Monday afternoon, the company said, “At approximately 11 a.m. Eastern Time on August 11, an incident occurred at US Steel’s Clairton Plant, specifically at Coke Oven Battery 13 and 14. Emergency crews were dispatched immediately. We are working closely with relevant authorities to determine the cause of the incident. The Clairton Plant employs approximately 1,300 men and women daily.”

Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi called it a tragic day for the entire community. The plant, the largest coke manufacturing facility in the United States, produces over 4 million tons of coke annually. Coke is a fuel used in smelting iron ore and is produced by heating coal in coke ovens.
