Therefore, maintaining a proper diet during this period is essential. Balanced nutrition not only empowers mothers but also provides vital nourishment for the child, promoting both physical and mental development.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development recently shared guidelines on social media platform ‘X’, emphasizing the importance of including all necessary nutrients in the diets of nursing mothers. Generally, food can be categorized into four main groups. The first group consists of grains, including options like wheat, rice, millet, and ragi. These foods provide energy and help maintain activity throughout the day.

The second group includes pulses and protein-rich foods such as moong, masoor, and chana. These play a vital role in body repair and the child’s growth. The third group comprises fruits and vegetables, which are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Green vegetables like spinach, fenugreek, and seasonal fruits such as bananas, apples, and papayas strengthen the mother’s body and enhance immunity.

The fourth group consists of dairy products like milk, yogurt, paneer, and buttermilk. These are rich in calcium, which is essential for strengthening bones. Additionally, a small amount of healthy fats is necessary, such as ghee, nuts (almonds, walnuts), jaggery, and sesame. These provide energy and help combat weakness. However, it is important to consume these in balanced amounts, as overeating can lead to more harm than good.

Breastfeeding women are generally advised to eat slightly more than usual, approximately one-quarter extra. This is because the body expends more energy during this time, as the process of milk production is continuous. Failing to consume the right amount of food can lead to fatigue, weakness, and irritability.

Moreover, hydration is crucial. Drinking enough water throughout the day keeps the body hydrated and supports the milk production process. Light walking and rest are also important to allow the body time to recover.
